Preset Pacesetters Senior High School

Learn about the history and values of Preset Pacesetters SHS

History

The School, Preset Pacesetters Senior High School, is the outgrowth of what started basically as an individual Mathematics Teacher’s desire to assist poor students in improving their SSSCE grades for admissions into the Nation’s tertiary institutions. Preset today is the success story of the first meeting of 9 students in the backyard of Mr. William Aveh at the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, Legon in 1996 while there as a teacher. The Founder was quick to see the potentials of the School when its population shot up to 60 in just a year after its starting.

This propelled Mr. Aveh to think of formalizing the School into the stream of Remedial Schools running in the country at the time. Later in 1999, the National Accreditation Board gave the School, accreditation to run the GES-approved, 3-year Senior High School program leading to the award of Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) for its students. The steadily increasing population necessitated the search for a permanent site and today, Preset Pacesetters Senior High School is located at Madina Firestone, a suburb of Legon, Accra. The current student population of the School stands at 1,500. The School boasts of over 4,500 graduates over the years with a high number gaining admission into various tertiary institutions in Ghana and elsewhere. It has a Teaching Staff strength of 65 permanent members, all graduates of prestigious Universities in Ghana. There are also non-teachers on the School’s payroll. The School is structured to run along the policy guidelines of the Ghana Education Service and its administrative procedures have also been streamlined and are managed by a Director and his Deputy, Headmaster and Assistant Headmasters.

The School offers the General Arts, General Science, Visual Arts, Business and Home Economics courses. There are Morning and Evening Classes making up the Remedial Section (Premodal School) as well as Pre-SHS Classes for JHS Graduates awaiting results for admission into Senior High Schools. The mainstream Senior High School section also has both Boarding and Day options with very competitive fees. The mainly Senior High School has plans of establishing a tertiary institution that will incorporate the same level of academic and social discipline associate with the High School into its students.

The Founder’s main objective is to provide quality but affordable private education to Ghana’s youth; but achieving this objective has not come without challenges. Principally, there was difficulty in raising the initial start-up capital for establishing the School as the Founder was limited by resources at the time. In the long run, the Founder hopes to be able to lobby policy makers to incorporate entrepreneurship into the curricula at all the levels of education in the country. He believes that a great tool for poverty reduction in Ghana lies in training the youth to think of ways to generate self-employment as an alternative to the current trend where graduates parade the corridors of offices in search of non-existing jobs. At the end, the Founders joy lies in seeing a generation of well-disciplined graduates in the country.
